Samsung Galaxy OLED Display Technology Shoot-Out

DisplayMate 分析了 Samsung Galaxy 手機上所使用的 OLED 螢幕,說明 OLED 的優點,目前實際應用的問題,還有 OLED 螢幕的缺點

首先,因為 OLED 的 green and red diode 的發光效率與壽命都遠比 blue diode 好,並非每種 diode 都有相近的特性,要達成標準校正的 sRGB, OLED 螢幕會在 power efficiency and age 上付出很大的代價,能量會在 blue diode 上消耗很多,且 blue diode 會衰退的很快,很快就無法達到標準校正。

因此 Samsung 為了省電與壽命,除了使用 Pentile 增加一倍的 blue diode 數量,也將色彩調整成偏重 green,增加壽命與耗電都比較好的 green diode 做動時間,結果就是顏色飽和刺眼到不行與偏色的 AMOLED Screen...


也因為 OLED 每個顏色 pixel 耗電量與壽命都不同,文章建議使用綠色的桌布而不是黑色的桌布,且 OLED 在 picture and video 這類 low Average Picture Levels 的使用環境,例如圖片或動態影片,OLED screen 會有比較好的表現,傳統 LCD 則是在 text-based reading,例如黑底白字的網頁瀏覽,有比較好的表現。


OLED displays still require more power on the average than comparable LCDs.

The current generation of Blue OLEDs age much faster than the Red and Green OLEDs. The current 50 percent aging Brightness for Blue is specified by the manufacturers at 20,000 hours while Red and Green are both over 200,000 hours.

Blue OLEDs have only about one tenth the power efficiency of Red and Green OLEDs (see below), so the additional Blue produces a significant waste of precious power that has very little effect on the total screen Brightness

Not only is the Galaxy S I,II,III Color Gamut set way too large, but it is also very irregular – Green is much more saturated compared with either Red or Blue

In fact, color calibration of an OLED display so that it matches the sRGB / Rec.709 Standard would require complex color mixtures that will have noticeably higher power demands, which may make OLED calibration challenging in the near future for mobile displays until the OLED efficiencies (or battery power) increase significantly.

Galaxy S III is somewhat more efficient for videos and significantly less efficient for text applications.

iPhone 4 are still considerably more power efficient than the latest OLEDs for bright image content with white backgrounds, which includes most text based and web applications. On the other hand, OLEDs are much more power efficient for full screen videos and photos, which generally have low Average Picture Levels.
